The New York City Council is looking for an Assistant Sergeant-At-Arms to provide primary coverage within various areas of both City Hall and offices at 250 Broadway.

SALARY RANGE:

$63,860 – $63,860

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting in maintaining order and decorum during Council Committee meetings/hearings, ensures the proper seating of witnesses and the public at meetings and hearings.
  • Handling of exhibits during said meetings/hearings, distributing calendars, minutes, bills and resolutions to Council Members during meetings/hearings.
  • Covering all off-site hearings, participating in special events and parades, providing security and screening visitors.
  • Responding to alarms and emergencies, and investigate incidents and suspicious activity.
  • Patrolling the Council’s floors and property on foot, as designated.
  • Complete daily reports, including relevant information, observations, surveillance footage, and signatures, as required.
  • Greeting, checking in, and directing visitors assuring that only authorized personnel enter City Hall and the Council’s offices at 250 Broadway.
  • Keeping up-to-date on emergency and disaster procedures. Able to locate the nearest exits, to understand and respond to written or oral instruction in case of an emergency.
  • Successfully completing required trainings and certifications, as required.
  • Participating in daily shift team meetings so the entire Sergeant-At-Arms staff is up to date at the beginning of each shift.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in any of New York’s five boroughs, as needed.
  • Miscellaneous duties and projects, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid New York State Driver’s License.
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency.
  • Two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience.
  • Knowledge of security procedures and practices.
  • Skill in conducting searches and using security equipment.
  • Skill in administering first aid and using emergency equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills; takes initiative, determination, and assertiveness.
  • Availability to participate in after hours and/or off-site events and weekends/holidays a plus.

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
