The New York City Council’s Data Team is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Data Intern to support our efforts in managing, processing, and automating the flow of data to improve efficiency and transparency within the Council. As a member of our team, you will work on impactful projects that involve organizing, summarizing, and automating data processes, using advanced tools and techniques in data manipulation, automation, and natural language processing (NLP).
SALARY RANGE:
Hourly rate of $31.04

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Data Collection & Management: Gather and organize data from various sources such as emails, documents, and online repositories.
- Data Summarization: Process and summarize large datasets, documents, and communications into concise and actionable information.
- Automation: Develop scripts to automate repetitive tasks, such as data input, organization, and transformation.
- System Integration: Work on integrating data into existing systems and ensuring its accuracy and accessibility.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the data team and other stakeholders to ensure that data is processed efficiently and accurately.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrollment in a degree program in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field a plus.
- Strong analytical skills and interest in working with data to solve problems.
- Experience with programming and scripting languages such as Python and Bash.
- Familiarity with data extraction, web scraping, data manipulation, or working with structured/unstructured data.
- Some experience with a strong desire to learn pipeline engineering for natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs) (e.g., Llama, DeepSeek, Falcon, Mistral), including prompt engineering, and optimization techniques.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to document and present data-driven insights.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience with automation or scripting to improve workflows preferred.
- Exposure to automation of large language models (LLMs) or similar technologies for data processing and summarization.
- Experience and/or desire to work with public sector data & government is a plus.

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
