Forest Hills Girl Scout Julia Lin on Tuesday met with Dr. Alister Martin, the city’s health commissioner, to discuss her accessibility work and aspirations in the medical field.
For her Gold Award project, “Simple Signs for Support,” Lin taught basic American Sign Language to seniors, patients and healthcare staff in and beyond her neighborhood.

Members of the New York City Council said Tuesday they plan to introduce new legislation to strengthen public education around Legionnaires’ disease and bolster prevention efforts amid an ongoing outbreak of the severe form of pneumonia on the Upper East Side, which has sickened at least 82 people and killed five.
The City Council is planning to hold a hearing in September on the health department’s response to the outbreak, which Council Speaker Julie Menin called “insufficient” in a press briefing on Tuesday.

Richmond Hill community objects to facility set to be built on Jamaica Ave.

Dozens of Richmond Hill residents poured onto Jamaica Avenue on June 18 to say exactly what they think of a planned homeless shelter in their neighborhood: “Not here.”
The rally, organized by Community Board 9, drew a diverse crowd of parents, business owners, religious leaders, civic association representatives and elected officials, all united in opposition to a five-story men’s shelter at 118-08 Jamaica Ave.

Building owners in New York City must now test cooling towers for Legionella bacteria every 31 days while they are operating — three times more often than previously required — under new regulations that went into effect Friday. The New York City Council on Thursday passed a package of bills seeking to do more to educate parents about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines as immunization rates show signs of starting to dip.
The five bills aim to make it easier for schools to disseminate accurate information about vaccines to parents, as well as to require the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to develop a plan by year’s end that will educate New Yorkers about the importance of childhood and adolescent vaccinations.
