Forest Hills Girl Scout Julia Lin on Tuesday met with Dr. Alister Martin, the city’s health commissioner, to discuss her accessibility work and aspirations in the medical field.

For her Gold Award project, “Simple Signs for Support,” Lin taught basic American Sign Language to seniors, patients and healthcare staff in and beyond her neighborhood. She created reference sheets that are in use at facilities such as NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst.

Lin, who attends the Bronx High School of Science, at the meeting discussed her career goals and work to expand her efforts. Martin shared his own story of becoming an emergency physician, and presented her with a pin for her Girl Scout badge jacket, above.

Lin has received a Council citation for her work. She also has been Queens’ top Girl Scout cookie seller for the past six years.

The meeting was facilitated by area City Councilmember and Health Committee Chair Lynn Schulman.
