A new city law in response to the scourge of illegal smoke shops went into effect this summer, and on Monday, the Queens councilmember who sponsored it and other officials discussed how the new law will work.

Introduction 1001-B, which went into effect on July 23, prohibits owners of commercial spaces from knowingly leasing to unlicensed sellers of marijuana or tobacco products, and imposes fines on landlords for violations.

Under a new law, landlords can be fined up to $10,000 if they knowingly rent out commercial space to unlicensed marijuana sellers.

The fines are part of a larger citywide push to crack down on illegal smoke shops. There are 8,000 of them throughout the five boroughs, according to City Council data.

The city’s efforts to weed out illegal pot shops have a new feature: a law punishing commercial landlords who knowingly lease space to the unlicensed joints.

The law, which took effect July 23, was highlighted by two of its City Council sponsors at a public service announcement outside a licensed pot seller near Union Square on Monday.
