“Three months after being nominated to her post by Mayor Adams, the new commissioner for the city’s Department of Investigation demanded Tuesday that his budget provide her agency with more funding to make improvements toward fulfilling its mission.

Commissioner Jocelyn Strauber, who was nominated in December to head DOI by Adams, made the ask Tuesday morning during one of a series of ongoing City Council hearings focused on Adams’ proposed budget for the 2023 fiscal year.

Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who heads the Oversight and Investigations Committee, said Strauber’s request is a reasonable one. Both she and Councilwoman Diana Ayala expressed concern Tuesday that the budget, as it’s currently proposed, won’t provide the watchdog with enough funding to perform its core functions.

“They definitely need more funding,” Brewer told the Daily News after the hearing. “She’s being honest about what’s needed.”
