I acknowledge that there are real needs for safety improvements across the city and that several communities need expanded, protected access to bike lanes. However, I am here as a voice for MY community and the people who elected me—and they do not see this plan as an improvement. Large swaths of the 45th District have a transit deserts—with few train lines and diminishing bus service, my constituents have no choice but to drive.

“Friday’s incident near Midwood High School and Brooklyn College at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Campus Road is another area where a string of car crashes have occurred in our community. This demonstrates the urgent need for the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) to prioritize street improvements in this area to avoid anyone else getting hurt. I am deeply concerned for the safety of our residents, especially after I made a request weeks ago for speed reduction measures to be implemented and the request is still pending DOT approval.

BROOKLYN, NY—New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis announced the passage of the plan to close Rikers Island and create a pathway towards restorative justice for thousands of families during a Stated meeting on Thursday. Council Member Louis, who voted in favor of the bill, expressed her support for the movement to end mass incarceration, yet highlighted the need for oversight and assurances that the City would integrate fairness into the criminal justice system, and end the school to prison pipeline.

The setting of the sun will mark the dawn of a joyous celebration amongst our Jewish community, Sukkot. Wishing all who will observe this momentous occasion, a Chag Sameach! 

At sunset, our Jewish friends will observe the holiest day in the Hebrew calendar – Yom Kippur. I wish all who will observe this Day of Atonement an easy fast as you pray, reflect, and repent for past transgressions.

On Sunday evening, our Jewish friends will observe Rosh Hashanah or New Year – a day of joy, a time of hope, and year of happiness. With every new beginning, we reflect and pray for health, prosperity, and peace.
