“It is no secret how hard mothers work around-the-clock to support themselves and their families. Women deserve their fair share, regardless of their workspace. With more women of color at home due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we need to end the racial and gender disparities that perpetuate poverty in predominantly Black and brown households. NEW YORK—Council Member Farah Louis (D-Brooklyn), Vice Co-Chair of the Black Latino and Asian Caucus (BLAC), released the following statement after 17-year-old Devonte Lewis was shot in the chest and hand outside of the Urban Dove Charter School on Thursday afternoon. He later died from his injuries at Kings County Hospital.

Our children are struggling to comprehend the crises that we are facing, adapting to the drastic changes, while focusing on their schoolwork. We urgently need expanded access to mental health support to meet these unprecedented challenges and remove the socio-emotional barriers that could hinder our students’ ability to excel in school.
