City Hall, October 7, 2008 – At today’s Stated Council meeting, the members of the City Council will vote on legislation requiring the Department of City Planning to file a waterfront plan every ten years as well as land use legislation approving a 1.7 million-square-foot, mixed-use development in East Harlem . The Council will also vote to modify previous enhancements to the J-51 tax benefit program to include the Penn South residential community into the program.

No woman shall in any way be prevented from accessing clinics; new bill takes action against intimidation, threats and harassment

NEW YORK, NY – City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn today announced the introduction of the Clinic Access Bill, which will protect women seeking services at reproductive health care facilities. New York City Population Over 65 Expected to Increase by 45% by 2030

(September 15, 2008)-The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) president Jo Ivey Boufford, Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Linda Gibbs today released a report that takes the viewpoint of older adults themselves to help guide the City’s planning process to meet the expected 45 percent increase in New York City’s over age 65 population by 2030.

Proposed rule threatens access to birth control, reproductive healthcare

New York City, September 16, 2008 – Together with women’s health advocates, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn today issued a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Michael O. Leavitt urging him to withdraw a proposed rule that would severely threaten women’s access to healthcare nationwide. Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice New York and the New York American Civil Liberties Union joined Speaker Quinn in condemning the proposed change.

Also votes to create penalties for scaling city buildings, bridges, and monuments

City Hall, September 4, 2008 – At today’s Stated Council meeting, the members of the City Council will vote on three pieces of legislation to improve construction safety at sites where tower and climber cranes are in use. Additionally, the Council will vote on legislation that would make it illegal to scale any city structure over 50 feet tall, including statues, cranes, bridges, signs, or buildings.
