Elected officials and immigration advocates held a rally Thursday evening, May 29, on the steps of Tweed Courthouse in Manhattan, calling for the release of Dylan Lopez Contreras, a 20-year-old Bronx student currently being held in ICE custody.
Attendees at the 6 p.m. rally included U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Council Members Alexa Avilés, Carmen De La Rosa and Gale Brewer, Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes, along with representatives from the New York Immigration Coalition.

SUNSET PARK — Two months after a rally was held on the potential closure of the United Senior Center of Sunset Park at 475 53rd St. due to rising rents, another one was held as the deadline for a deal looms closer.
Rain forced the May 9 rally to be held indoors and included regulars from the center, pols and community leaders to plead for a solution to keep the center open as its lease expires in June.

Over 70 advocates, service providers and community members gathered in Bensonhurst Park on Tuesday to rally for equitable funding for Brooklyn’s diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.
City Council Members Alexa Avilés and Susan Zhuang joined the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families’s 18% and Growing campaign, which was founded nearly 20 years ago to advocate for budget equity in New York City.

A City Council committee was slated to discuss two bills Friday that would ramp up monitoring of delivery traffic and e-commerce warehouses in New York City in an attempt to reduce pollution and improve air quality in the surrounding neighborhoods.
The bills, sponsored by Brooklyn Councilmember Alexa Aviles, would require the city’s Department of Environmental Protection to create regulations for areas frequented by large freight trucks. Those areas are often called “last-mile” zones, in reference to the final leg of e-commerce routes between distribution centers and delivery destinations. Environmental advocates and experts say they are disproportionately located in low-income communities of color — like Red Hook in Aviles’ district — and are associated with worse local air quality that can lead to higher rates of asthma, heart disease and other health issues.

District 38 Council Member Alexa Avilés knows how hard the Trump administration’s immigration policy is hitting Red Hook.
Avilés, who is Chair of the Immigration Committee, says that community providers have noted drops in undocumented people accessing services and a lot of talk about moving away.
People do not feel safe, according to Avilés.
“There’s unfortunately an enormous amount of vitriol and scapegoating,” she says. “The mayor himself has scapegoated new arrivals on just about any issue with funding. So, it’s created a lot of tensions and challenges amongst community members.”

World Journal: 纪念李宗保 布碌仑一街道以他命名 (5.18.25)
自去年松柏之家社区服务中心(HCS)前董事局主席李宗保过世后，市议员提案将布碌仑(布鲁克林)15大道交70街处将重命名为「李宗保道」(Don Lee Way)。17日李宗保的亲属与众多社区人士参与揭幕仪式，他的女儿致词表示，借此仪式让父亲对社区的付出能被众人看见，让家人都非常感恩，也让父亲的贡献得以获得缅怀。
作为第四代华裔移民，在华埠长大的李宗保长期活跃并致力服务纽约华社，生前曾为四任纽约市长工作过，担任财政、公共关系、治安与医疗改革等职位。去年5月6日李宗保与家人在南美洲度假期间突发疾病不幸逝世，享寿65岁。此消息令民众深感遗憾，日落公园市议员阿维莱斯(Alexa Aviles)提出将松柏之家班森贺中心前街道重新以李宗保的名字命名，延续他的精神遗产。
