Queens Borough Board Approves Land Sale for Major Clean Transportation Project in Council District 31 Signaling an Important Milestone for the Project

(Queens, NY) This week, the Queens Borough Board, comprised of the borough’s City Council delegation, the Queens borough president, and its community board chairs, all voted to approve the land sale for an industrially zoned parcel of land which will create one creation of the largest public electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in New York City—in the Springfield Gardens section of the 31st councilmanic district. The project, championed by Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, will bring a critical clean transportation facility to Southeast Queens, advancing equity, sustainability, and economic opportunity in a historically underserved community while building on New York City’s Green Economy Action Plan.

The development will be led by Wildflower JFK North, LLC, a New York City-based developer that creates urban infrastructure for sustainability will purchase the site from the City in response to a Request for Proposals (RFP) the New York City Economic Development Corporation issued in the Fall of 2022.Located along the southwest side of Rockaway Boulevard near 145th Avenue, the 2.5-acre site will feature a minimum of 65 EV charging stations, including 12 fast chargers, accessible to the public 24/7. The site will serve all types of vehicles, including electric trucks, and has the potential to expand to over 200 EV-ready stalls.

Importantly, the project includes a 25% Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) participation goal—reinforcing Council Member Brooks-Powers’ longstanding commitment to ensuring that major infrastructure investments benefit local workers and MWBE firms.

“This is a win for climate justice, economic equity, and transportation access,” said New York City Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, Chair to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. “From day one, I’ve made it a priority to bring transformative infrastructure investments to Southeast Queens—ones that are equitable, forward-looking, and community-centered. With this new EV hub, we are delivering cleaner air, creating local jobs, and ensuring our community is part of the future of mobility. I thank my colleagues on the Queens Borough Board for their support, and look forward to seeing this project break ground.”

“GatewayJFK is proud to support this visionary investment in clean transportation,” said James Johnson, Executive Director of GatewayJFK. “The EV charging hub will be located adjacent to the GatewayJFK Business Improvement District and just minutes from JFK International Airport making it a critical asset for the broader Southeast Queens industrial and logistics community. This project represents a major step toward providing cleaner, more sustainable trucking options for the businesses and freight operators that power our local economy. Wildflower LTD has been a great partner to the BID, and we’re excited to see their continued investment in the area. We also thank Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers for championing this initiative and voting yes to bring this project into the Southeast Queens community her leadership continues to deliver transformative, community-centered infrastructure where it’s needed most.”

“We are excited to increase access to electric vehicle charging in this critical area of the city,” said Adam Gordon, Founder of Wildflower JFK North, LLC. “We appreciate the support of Councilmember Brooks-Powers and look forward to working with her, community members and our neighbors to bring this vital infrastructure to Queens.”

Construction on the EV hub is expected to begin later this year, and Council Member Brooks-Powers will be closely monitoring progress on this important project.
