(New York, NY) My heart is with the families of the crew members who tragically lost their lives in the Cuauhtémoc ship collision, as well as the dozens injured in this heartbreaking incident.
As Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I will be working closely with the Department of Transportation to ensure a full review of any potential damage to the Brooklyn Bridge, and that our critical infrastructure remains safe, resilient, and able to withstand future challenges. We must understand what went wrong and what can be done to prevent tragedies like this from happening again — especially when our city’s vital infrastructure and public safety are at stake.
This vessel came to New York in peace and goodwill, and we owe it to the victims and their loved ones to treat this incident with the seriousness and accountability it demands.
