(New York, NY) On Thursday, March 27th, Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers will join community leaders, elected officials, and advocates for a rally demanding that Southeast Queens be included in the City’s Overnight Truck Parking Pilot and that the administration take real action to increase truck enforcement in the area.
Last week, the City announced the Overnight Truck Parking Pilot without consulting stakeholders in Southeast Queens or including any Industrial Business Zones (IBZs) in the community. Meanwhile, illegal truck parking remains a persistent issue in neighborhoods like Laurelton, Rosedale, Jamaica, Brookville and Springfield Gardens, disrupting residents’ quality of life and creating safety concerns. The rally will call on the Administration to enforce penalties against illegal truck parking and work with community stakeholders to deliver legal truck parking infrastructure in Southeast Queens that meets residents’ needs.
What: Press conference and rally for truck parking enforcement and inclusion of Southeast Queens in the City’s truck parking plan
When: Thursday, March 27, 2025, 11:00 AM
Where: Corner of Rockaway Boulevard and 144th Terrace, in front of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration building
Who:
- NYC Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers
- NYC Council Member Dr. Nantasha Williams
- Community leaders and advocates
- Representatives from civic and environmental justice organizations
Why: Illegal truck parking continues to plague Southeast Queens, and the administration’s failure to include the community in the Overnight Truck Parking Pilot only exacerbates the issue. Southeast Queens deserves real solutions, not exclusion. The rally will call on the City to:
- Expand the truck parking pilot to include Southeast Queens IBZs
- Increase truck enforcement in residential areas of Southeast Queens
Media Opportunities: Interviews with Council Member Brooks-Powers, community advocates, and impacted residents; photo and video opportunities of the rally and speakers.
