The New York City Council will vote on legislation this week to require the City to pay higher rates in its rental assistance voucher program for homeless New Yorkers. Int. 146-C also eliminates the program’s current five-year cap for vouchers. Moving forward, anyone who continues to qualify for the program will be eligible. These changes will increase the number of apartments available to homeless New Yorkers and help move more people out of shelter and into permanent housing. Last night, 48,245 people slept in a Department of Homeless Services shelter, according to the latest figures provided by the city on Tuesday.
