New York, NY – “As the tax lien sale sunsets today, I reiterate that our city simply cannot continue with this counterproductive system that has harmed so many communities and homeowners. New York City homeowners, especially seniors, veterans, and those in communities of color, have too often been placed in jeopardy of losing their homes and the equity built over generations. This undermines housing affordability and stability, as well as the health and safety of our communities. That is why I advanced additional COVID-19 exemptions, increased property tax debt and income eligibility thresholds, mandated outreach sessions, and established a task force to study this issue, while also calling for the lien sale’s cancellation to protect homeowners during the pandemic. The Council is committed to working with all stakeholders, including impacted communities, advocates and the Mayor, to ensure this past system is a relic and we enact new solutions that protect the economic health of the City, communities and homeowners.”
