With just one week remaining until the filing deadline, Speaker Mark-Viverito and Council Members visited a free tax preparation site and reminded New Yorkers that they can receive up to $8,923 through the Earned Income Tax Credit

Brooklyn, NY –Speaker Mark-Viverito along with Council Members Julissa Ferreras and Robert Cornegy today visited Food Bank NYC at the Bed-Stuy Restoration Plaza to remind New Yorkers to file their taxes and to utilize the Earned Income Tax Credit at free tax preparation sites at locations across the City.

New York— “I am appalled that a former Dominican Republic president and a potential future presidential candidate has used a derogatory term that is offensive, inappropriate and hurtful toward LGBT people. President Mejia needs to apologize to the LGBT community in his country and here in New York, where he made this unacceptable statement. Leaders are called to unite people, not divide us.

“Victor Gotbaum was a legendary labor leader who was instrumental in helping New York City through the fiscal crisis of the 1970’s. Victor worked tirelessly to bring together all sides during the crisis and his leadership helped put New York City on the pathway to recovery. New York— “We stand in solidarity with the LGBT communities of Indiana and Arkansas. At the hand of Indiana Governor Mike Pence, with a stroke of a pen, they are now living in a state that openly sanctions discrimination against them and their families. Governor Pence has repeatedly stated that discrimination is not a ‘Hoosier Value’. If this is true, we call him and the Indiana State Legislature to repeal this legislation immediately and replace it with legislation that protects LGBT people from discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations and hate violence.

Legislation serves as crucial first step in overhauling Human Rights Commission as outlined in Speaker Mark-Viverito’s State of the City Address

City Hall – Today the City Council will vote on three pieces of legislation that will strengthen the city’s Human Rights Commission. Introduction 421-A would expand annual reporting requirements. Introduction 689-A would require a minimum of five housing discrimination investigations during a period of one year commencing this October.
