“Today’s emergency oversight hearing of the Committees on Public Housing and Finance was convened to examine the impact federal sequestration will have on NYCHA’s 2014 budget. Though we have long known sequestration could impact the budget, it is alarming that the loss of millions of dollars in federal funding is only now coming to light.

I am deeply concerned that a $205 million dollar reduction to NYCHA would result in the loss of essential services for thousands of New Yorkers.

Bill requires muni meters to deactivate when parking rules are not in effect or when receipt paper is not available

New York, NY- At today’s Stated meeting, the City Council will vote on legislation to reform the muni meter payment system to ensure that drivers get what they pay for when parking in New York City.

Recognizing that the city is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Council will vote to extend the waiver of application, permit and inspection fees for work related to plumbing and electrical systems damaged by the storm.

First in series of citywide trainings to teach New Yorkers violence prevention strategies to stay safe

New York, NY – Today, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn joined concerned residents and LGBT New Yorkers for a free, community-wide self-defense class at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.

The class, led by instructors for the Center for Anti-Violence Education, empowered nearly 100 participants with violence prevention strategies and safety tips.

Bill would provide regulation following expansion of “pop-up” social adult day programs
New York, NY – Today, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Health Committee Chair Maria del Carmen Arroyo and Aging Committee Chair Jessica Lappin announced legislation to regulate social adult day care centers, requiring them to provide proper supervision, monitoring, care and nutrition. Within the past year, nearly 200 “pop-up” social adult day care programs have opened in the city, some of which have been actively luring healthy clients from traditional senior centers and referring them to managed care plans.

Council Oversight Hearings Result in 10 New Bills

City Hall – Today, Speaker Christine C. Quinn was joined by Council Members to announce 10 new Council bills that will be introduced as a result of the Council’s post-Hurricane Sandy oversight hearings. During the 11 hearings, the Council heard testimony from over 100 witnesses, including City agencies, non-profit providers, advocates, and members of the public who were affected by the storm.
