South Bronx, NY – New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito today delivered her second State of the City address, “More Justice,” a vision for 2016 to make New York a more fair, more just and more equal City for all New Yorkers.

“As New Yorkers welcome the Year of the Monkey, the City is showing an increased commitment to recognizing our diverse communities throughout the five boroughs by officially recognizing the holiday for the first time. After years of advocacy from the Council and community organizations, our city’s public school students no longer have to choose between missing a day of school and celebrating this significant holiday.

Council will also vote to co-name 42 public places in New York City
City Hall – Today the City Council will vote on a legislative package to reform Council rules and policies and set compensation for the city’s elected officials. Additionally, the Council will vote on legislation co-naming 42 streets, parks and public places. Finally, the Council will vote on legislation establishing discounted fees for Parks Department memberships to New Yorkers with disabilities.

Today, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña announced an innovative collaboration with Microsoft Corp. to provide New York City students and families with access to Microsoft software.
Students and families will be able to download Office 2016, Office for Mac 2016 and the Office 365 mobile apps available for Windows 10 tablets, iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

New York – New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced today that the New York City Council will introduce a legislative package to reform the taxi and for-hire vehicle (FHV) industries in New York City. The legislation, which will be introduced by Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez, Corey Johnson, Brad Lander, Fernando Cabrera, Stephen Levin, Rory Lancman, and Dan Garodnick is a result of the efforts of a Council working group led by Transportation Committee Chair Ydanis Rodriguez, along with Council Members Stephen Levin, Brad Lander, and James Vacca.
