Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, Council Member Andy King celebrated the $600,000 in Council funding to expand a video visitation program with the City’s three library systems to provide free live video services for families who wish to visit their NYC Department of Corrections (DOC) incarcerated loved ones. The program is offered at 22 public library branches across the five boroughs.

During these uncertain times we must remind ourselves of who we are as a city and hold steadfast to the values that we cherish and hold dear. The values of hard work, respect and coming together during times of adversity define us as New Yorkers. That will not change, no matter who is President.

Organizations can now apply for the Communities of Color Non-Profit Stabilization Fund. This Council initiative seeks to strengthen organizations that serve African American, Latino and Asian communities. Created by the Council in partnership with five founding organizations, it has funded critical capacity building for more than 80 community groups.

The Unaccompanied Minors Intiative was created by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Immigration Committee Chair Carlos Menchaca in 2014 with the Robin Hood Foundation and the New York Community Trust to prevent the detention and deportation of children who arrived in the United States to flee violence from Central America.

In its first year of operation, the program has won 60 asylum cases and helped 47 children obtain lawful permanent residency.
