The New York City Council has a dedicated team of city planners, attorneys, and administrative staff that support Council Members and the Land Use Committee. The Planning and Land Use Division helps the committee Chairs conduct hearings and analyze land use issues on behalf of Council Members. Before applications for land use changes begin public review and eventually reach the Council, there is a planning process that involves understanding the conditions of the affected area and engaging stakeholders including Administration agencies and community members including residents and elected officials.

The division is seeking to fill an Intern position for the summer. The start date for the internship is June 1, 2026.

SALARY RANGE:

Hourly rate of $32.05

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist staff in research, analysis and recommendations related to Community Planning functions.
  • Assist with the preparation of graphic presentations
  • Design and conduct various community outreach activities.
  • Assist with data collection activities and analysis in the office and/or field.
  • Analyze and map data in an engaging and user-friendly manner.
  • Collect, enter, tabulate and analyze demographic and performance data.
  • Prepare brief memos explaining methodology and findings.
  • Assist with the preparation of existing conditions reports and other plan chapters.
  • Conduct research as needed to assist senior staff on projects.
  • Attend meetings and hearings.
  • Other tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate program in urban planning, policy, economics, geography, or architecture/urban design a plus.
  • Solid project management skills including the ability to adapt to a changing environment and managing a wide variety of projects.
  • Computer applications proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (especially Illustrator and InDesign) and Microsoft 365 programs (especially Powerpoint, Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and SharePoint).
  • Ability to work five days per week.
  • Skills related to graphic design, GIS mapping, data visualization, notetaking, and census data acquisition highly desired.
  • Experience in Spanish translation is a plus.
