The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the “in house” law office for the City Council and provides legal services to the City Council. OGC advises and provides guidance to Council Members and employees on legal matters including but not limited to those related to conflicts of interest, litigation, employment, parliamentary procedures, Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests, appointments, document retention, legislation, compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, and policies affecting the City Council and the City.

The New York City Council is seeking to fill a Compliance Associate position within the Office of the General Counsel’s Public Integrity Unit. The Public Integrity Unit safeguards the integrity of the City Council by conducting background investigations for certain Council staff and appointees to task forces, boards, and commissions; review discretionary funding applications to ensure recipients meet eligibility requirements; monitor compliance with ethics rules, conflict-of-interest laws, and Council policies and procedures; and support other public integrity functions.

SALARY RANGE:

$75,000 to $75,000

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform confidential background checks.
  • Conduct a wide range of investigations for the Office of the General Counsel and the Office of the Speaker, as needed.
  • Assist in conducting background investigations of candidates for appointments to various taskforces, boards, and commissions.
  • Vet not-for profit community organizations.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or equivalent.
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, and web-based systems and databases.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with a wide variety of types of individuals. 
  • Ability to rapidly prioritize as well as execute while exhibiting good judgment in confidential and complex matters.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the City’s Conflicts of Interest Law is preferred, but not required, for this position.

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
