New York, New York (May 11, 2024) – Today, Council Member Gutiérrez is proudly reintroducing the Newborn Navigator Act, a crucial bill designed to enhance support for new parents and guardians. This legislation mandates the development and distribution of comprehensive parenting resource materials, covering education about essential child care items, child safety, breastfeeding and nutrition, social services programs, postpartum care resources, support groups, vaccination schedules, anti-discrimination laws, workplace accommodations, and more.

A new provision in the reintroduced act establishes a searchable database of city-approved resources, accessible to both parents and providers. Within 30 days of receiving a birth report, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will distribute these materials and provide contact information for elected representatives to new parents. Additionally, these materials will be available on the department’s website in multiple languages.

The Newborn Navigator Act addresses significant disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes, ensuring that every parent has access to vital information and support during the critical early months of parenthood. By providing easy access to resources, the Newborn Navigator Act aims to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths, promoting the well-being of families across New York City.
