Today, I am calling on America to stand with the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Since December 28th, 2019 and each day since then, the media has been flooded with images of an island in crisis following a major earthquake. The earthquake—the strongest to hit the island in over a century— has knocked out power, displaced thousands, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.

Puerto Rico has yet to recover from the tragedies of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which took nearly 3,000 lives in 2017. By the time our federal government sent support, about 1.87 million of our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico had lost access to clean drinking water. Three years later, the island is still waiting for the full disbursement of funds intended to help them rebuild.

I am urging the President to send any and all federal support available to Puerto Rico as they prepare for the potential of more earthquakes and aftershocks. We have an opportunity to take proactive action to better serve our brothers & sisters on the island.

Thank you to the brave individuals working around the clock to provide aid and relief. My heart is with you, Puerto Rico. New York stands with you.
