BROOKLYN, NY — Today, tons of debris and garbage was removed from an illegal dumping site in East Flatbush by the Department of Sanitation, in conjunction with Council Member Farah N. Louis (D-Brooklyn).

The massive cleanup of the abandoned car wash was a culmination to the interagency walk-through that she organized on Monday to address the illegal disposal of household and business trash along the Farragut Road corridor. The departments of Sanitation and Buildings, as well as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority saw firsthand the magnitude of the chronic problem to propose a more permanent solution.

As an incoming member of the New York City Council, this public health and safety issue has been among her top priorities. Council Member Louis worked in collaboration with the aforementioned agencies as well as the Department of Finance to locate the property owner and allocated funds for regular maintenance of the area under the NYC Cleanup Initiative.

With the additional budgetary cuts due to our city’s COVID-19 response, the Department of Sanitation cannot shoulder the responsibility of cleaning this corridor alone. We need the support of local residents and small business owners to help identify the illegal dumpers through the use of video surveillance and hold them accountable.

“It is unacceptable for the Farragut Road corridor to be littered with construction debris, junk and garbage from countless individuals and businesses. This behavior will not be tolerated I am committed to working more closely with our interagency partners to keep our beautiful community clean and safe for all. I look forward to the other corresponding agencies joining us on the journey to transform this abandoned site from an illegal dumping site into a beautified pathway into our manufacturing and industrial business zone (IBZ),” said Council Member Farah N. Louis.

New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis represents the 45th Council District, which comprises Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands, & Kensington in Brooklyn, NY. She is a member of the committees on Civil Service and Labor; Economic Development; Education; Finance; Housing and Buildings; Youth Services; and Justice System. Council Member Louis is the Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus and Vice Co-Chair of the Black, Latino/a, and Asian Caucus.
