BROOKLYN, NY — Today, Council Member Farah N. Louis (D-BROOKLYN) issued the following statement after George Floyd, a black man, was held to the ground by a Minneapolis officer who kneeled on his neck until he lost his consciousness and later died. The four officers involved were terminated and the incident prompted an FBI investigation.

STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER LOUIS

“Today, I saw that yet another unarmed black man was killed—by a reckless Minneapolis officer who pierced his neck with his knee until he lost consciousness and later died.

“These black men are fathers, sons, our brothers who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

“My heart is with the family and loved ones of #GeorgeFloyd who is among the countless men and women killed during police encounters every year.

“Despite the swift termination of the officers involved in this latest incident, Floyd’s family deserves justice. As we seek charges and an indictment, we need to send a clear message that such reprehensible behavior must be punished in order to discourage its pervasiveness in our society,” said Council Member Farah N. Louis.

New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis represents the 45th Council District, which is comprised of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands, & Kensington in Brooklyn, NY. She is a member of the committees on Civil Service and Labor; Economic Development; Education; Finance; Housing and Buildings; Youth Services; and Justice System. Council Member Louis is the Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus and Vice Co-Chair of the Black, Latino/a, and Asian Caucus.
