NEW YORK – New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis issued the following statement after a father of three was killed in a drive-by shooting in Flatbush by an unknown suspect who remains at large.

STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER FARAH N. LOUIS

“On the first day of school, a special milestone in every child’s life, 33-year-old James Dorce, a father of three was killed in Flatbush. His father and siblings were left devastated at the hospital. One gun, one dispute has turned the American Dream into a nightmare. No parent – in our district, in our city, in our nation – should ever have to bury their child and yet we have seen these events occur over and over again. Our community, particularly black and brown youth, are caught in a crossfire that is endangering the lives of an entire generation. We cannot continue to live as though this is the new norm and that human life has no value. Guns are not tools for conflict resolutions, they are weapons used to kill. Until this perpetrator and nation as a whole understand this concept, these tragedies may never end. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family as they cope with the untimely death of their loved one.”

New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis represents the 45th Council District which is comprised of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands, & Kensington in Brooklyn, NY. She is a member of the committees on Civil Service and Labor; Economic Development; Education; Finance; Housing and Buildings; Committee on Youth Services; and Justice System. Council Member Louis is also a proud member of the Women’s Caucus as well as the Black, Latino/a, and Asian Caucus.
