Budget cuts to New York City’s community composting program are “unacceptable,” Council Member Shaun Abreu, the new chair of the city’s Sanitation and Solid Waste Management committee, said during his first hearing of the session Tuesday. Restoration of the program’s funding, along with other organics issues, containerization and oversight of the city’s commercial waste zones are priorities for his committee and the council, said Abreu, who serves a district in Northern Manhattan.

Mayor Eric Adams announced on Thursday that all of Community Board 9 will receive on-street containers and new automated side-loading trucks starting in spring 2025 as an expansion of District 7’s trash containerization program, becoming the first fully-containerized district. While CB9 leaders say that they have not yet seen a plan for the program, they are excited about the announcement and hope to soon be able to provide feedback based on the pilot.

New York City middle school and high school students could soon be required to receive warnings about the negative impacts of social media under new legislation City Councilman Shaun Abreu plans to introduce next month.

Abreu’s bill would compel the city Department of Education to distribute facts at the beginning of each school year about social media addiction, its potential health impacts and the dangers posed by engaging with strangers online.

About a week after her inauguration, Shafik held a breakfast event where she met with local leaders like Community Board 9 Chair Victor Edwards and New York City Council member Shaun Abreu, CC ’14, who represents District 7, leaving many hopeful for a change in Columbia’s relationship with West Harlem.

New York State Assembly District 69 candidates have condemned the alleged chemical spraying of Columbia student protesters. Gov. Kathy Hochul, District 7 Council Member Shaun Abreu, CC ’14, and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine also condemned the attacks.

During a pro-Palestinian rally last Friday, protestors were allegedly sprayed with a hazardous chemical, according to nearly two dozen protestors.

An active game of musical chairs in the City Council ended on Thursday, with changes in store for nearly a dozen committee chair positions for the 2024-2025 session.

In a move that will reduce waste in the nation’s largest city, the New York City Council has enacted legislation requiring operators of sports stadiums and arenas to allow attendees to bring refillable beverage containers into events in those venues. 

The legislation—introduced by Council Member Shaun Abreu of Manhattan’s 7th District—directs that stadium and arena managers, “shall not prohibit an individual attending any professional or collegiate sporting competition.
