News 12 – Mayor Eric Adams has tightened rules to limit adult migrants to 30 days in city-run facilities, but now there is a proposal to change that.

Council Member Shahana Hanif is introducing a new bill that would prohibit the city or mayor from imposing restrictions on the length of a shelter stay. 

Hanif tells News 12, “We are hearing from asylum seekers across the city who have received these notices that this is creating further confusion for them, further destabilizing them.”

The proposal from Councilmember Shahana Hanif, who chairs the Council’s immigration committee, takes aim at Mayor Eric Adams’ recent imposition of shelter stay limits for single adult migrants.

Daily News – Lewis-Martin’s comments came after months of criticism from the mayor against his fellow Democrat President Biden, saying the White House needs to do more to help the city handle an influx of tens of thousands of migrants.

At that point, the Adams administration didn’t have clear answers about who would be running legal services or how they would be administered, said City Council Member Shahana Hanif, who heads the council’s immigration committee.
