The New York City Council passed legislation on Wednesday that will allow for same-day and walk-in appointments at certain IDNYC service enrollment centers. It was one of many changes to the system to improve the application process.

The bill, sponsored by Councilmember Shahana K. Hanif, will also make it so that residents can find the earliest available date and time on any online appointment scheduling system.

The city will have to provide in-person application appointments to match the demand for IDNYC and develop an annual training program for employees involved in the application process. Additionally, the city will have to provide a process in which a supervisor can review documents that have been declined during an application appointment.

Currently, New Yorkers must make an appointment online or through 311 to get an IDNYC card. Appointments are made available each Friday for the following week.

IDNYC is a free government-issued identification card that is eligible for all residents at least 10 years old and up. First-time applicants get a free year membership to 33 cultural institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Botanical Garden, The MET and more.

The approved bill to bring application changes to IDNYC is expected to take effect later this year.
