“With today’s vote, New York State sends a strong message that everyone deserves to have access to higher education regardless of their legal status. With access to TAP financial assistance and college savings accounts for immigrant students, we will continue to help pave the way for immigrants to flourish and make great contributions to our communities. I would like to thank Chancellor Tisch, Commissioner King and the Board of Regents for their leadership on this salient issue that will make an enormous difference for our immigrant students. I urge the State Senate and Assembly to move quickly to pass the bill. New York has long been a leader in immigration issues in this nation: let’s pass this bill and continue this tradition.”

Statement by Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Committee on Higher Education:
“Though the Federal DREAM Act was not passed this year, New York State can still create a DREAM Act of its own, and the Board of Regents is helping to make that a reality. Too many young people have been denied access to higher education as a result of bad policy, however a New York State DREAM act will provide that chance to thousands who can truly benefit.”

Statement by Robert Jackson, Chair of the Committee on Education:
“It is encouraging to see the NYS Board of Regents take definitive steps to increase undocumented students’ access to higher education. This vote will spur on their dreams of attaining a sustainable future in America and further helps recognize their invaluable place in our economy. It’s a win-win situation for everyone”.

Statement by Daniel Dromm, Chair of the Committee on Immigration:
“I commend the NYS Board of Regents for their vote today because this is something that not only benefits immigrant students, but by encouraging higher education, benefits our country as a whole. These students are woven into the very fabric of America and it is time we allow them to fully participate in our society and pursue the American dream. By making TAP available to them, we are opening the doors to higher learning and giving them the opportunity to make long-lasting contributions to our country.”
