The initiative increases financial stability among Human Services providers; New York City becomes the first major city in the country to provide indirect funding

Map change will ensure that a correctional facility will never be allowed on Rikers again

New York, NY – As part of its ongoing commitment to close the jail facilities at Rikers Island, today the City began the land use process to officially prohibit the incarceration of individuals there after December 31, 2026, when the borough-based jail system is expected to be in operation.

New York, NY – In an effort to reduce paper waste and exposure to harmful chemicals on receipts, the City Council will hold upcoming hearings on bills designed to give customers more choice over receiving receipts and phase out the use of BPA-coated receipt paper. 

The Council will consider four bills that will look at providing consumers with the option of declining a paper receipt in exchange for an e-receipt;

This legislation is designed to rein in misuse of placards throughout the City and is among the strongest measures ever proposed to tackle this corruption by the Council.

Fulfills commitment made between the Council and Mayor at June budget handshake

The Council will also vote to expand prevailing wage protections

New York, NY – In anticipation of new State bail reform measures, New York City will launch an expansion of its successful Supervised Release program as a proven alternative judges will be able to assign in lieu of bail. As part of the commitment made to justice reform during the passage of the borough-based jail plan, the City Council will dedicate $7 million more in additional funding for the program.

City Hall – The New York City Council on Wednesday will vote to pass Speaker Johnson’s historic streets master plan legislation. The legislation will require the Department of Transportation to issue and implement a transportation master plan every five years.

NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Transportation Committee Chair Ydanis Rodriguez, Council Members, and transportation, accessibility, environmental, and safe streets advocates rallied in advance of the City Council passing Speaker Johnson’s historic streets master plan legislation. The legislation will be voted on in committee on Tuesday and then go to the full Council for a vote on Wednesday, October 30th.

The legislation will require the Department of Transportation to issue and implement a transportation master plan every five years.
