City Hall, NY – “The Council passed the historic SoHo/NoHo rezoning to increase housing production and especially affordable housing production, invest in arts and culture, and create a neighborhood that is more economically vibrant and equitable. There were concerns about the accompanying bill that was advanced at the City Council’s last Stated Meeting in December 2021, and we agree it could benefit from a fuller discussion with various stakeholders, including residents in SoHo and NoHo.

City Hall, NY – New York City Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams announced today that Mandela Jones will join her team as Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications. Jones brings more than a decade of public service, inside and outside of government, to the Speaker’s office. Most recently, he was the Chief Communications Officer at Alliance for Safety and Justice, one of the nation’s largest criminal justice advocacy organizations that works on public safety legislation and policy in eight of the country’s biggest states by elevating underserved crime survivors as stakeholders.

The Council will also vote to expand access to long-acting reversible birth control in City-run health facilities 

City Hall, NY – New York City is proudly home to millions of working, taxpaying immigrants, yet those who are not U.S. citizens have no power at the ballot box to determine who represents them. The Council today will vote on historic legislation to give eligible non-citizen New Yorkers the right to vote in local elections. Under this bill, any New Yorker who is a lawful permanent resident or authorized to work in the United States, who has been a resident of New York City for at least 30 consecutive days, and who meets all the qualifications for registering to vote under the Election Law other than U.S.

The Council will also vote on bills to better serve youth in temporary housing and foster care

City Hall, NY – With the winter months approaching and children ages 5–11 now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, the Council today will vote on legislation to help parents and guardians get their children vaccinated by ensuring they receive four hours of paid leave, allowing them to accompany their child to receive a COVID-19 vaccine or to care for a child experiencing temporary side effects.
