City Hall – With plastic waste wreaking havoc on our planet, the New York City Council is further proving its commitment to reducing plastic waste in our City landfills. Members will vote on a bill to prohibit food service establishments from providing single-use plastic straws, stirrers and splash sticks to customers who don’t ask for them.

City Hall – “Based on our review of the charging document and Mr. Chaim Deutsch’s plea agreement, the Council has concluded that the office of the 48th Council District has been vacated under the operation of law. Mr. Deutsch confessed to a crime and violated his oath of office. He is no longer a member of the City Council.”

Background: Under New York State Public Officers Law §30(1)(e), a public office is deemed vacant if the holder is convicted of a crime involving a violation of his oath of office.

City and state legislation would disqualify police guilty of misconduct in other departments from getting hired in New York

City Hall, NY – As part of the Council’s efforts to increase police accountability and reimagine public safety, Speaker Corey Johnson, Council Member Francisco Moya, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams are introducing a bill that will ban the city from hiring police officers from other jurisdictions who were fired for misconduct or resigned while being investigated for misconduct.

The Council will also vote on plan to reduce food waste in City agencies

City Hall – In an effort to combat environmental harm to New Yorkers, particularly those in low-income communities and communities of color, the Council on Earth Day will vote on a bill that will ban the use of non-biological pesticides, such as glyphosates, on any playgrounds, parks, or other property owned or leased by the City, with limited exceptions for invasive and harmful species and for worker protections.

City Hall – City Council Speaker Corey Johnson  announced today that the Council will introduce and hear a legislative package for smart, safe, and sustainable deliveries sponsored by Speaker Johnson Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez, Antonio Reynoso, Carlina Rivera, and Keith Powers.  

It includes a bill to create a pilot program for micro-distribution centers to stop trucks from using our sidewalks and streets for hours on end to unload their goods, as well as a bill to expand commercial loading zones citywide.

The Council will also vote to extend protections for COVID-19 impacted commercial tenants

 City Hall – The New York City Council will vote today on five bills and three resolutions designed to increase police accountability and reimagine public safety in our city.

To increase accountability, the Council will vote on a bill that will effectively end qualified immunity as a defense for certain civil rights violations.
