“For too long, the Special Victims Division (SVD) of the NYPD has failed to appropriately respond to incidents and survivors of sexual assault and other gender-based violence. The Council has increasingly pushed for greater accountability and oversight of SVD to properly support survivors and help them access safety and justice. We will closely monitor the Department of Justice’s investigation into SVD, their policies, and practices.

Women Council members also announce intention to provide city funding for abortion care and support services

City Hall, NY – In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Speaker Adrienne Adams and the City’s first women majority New York City Council unveiled a “NYC Abortion Rights Act” legislative package to safeguard abortion and advance reproductive health care in the City.

City Hall, NY – Speaker Adrienne Adams submitted remarks for the City Council joint oversight hearing by the Committee on Health and Committee on Hospitals on “Maternal Health, Mortality, and Morbidity.”  

The hearing takes place one day after the release of a medical research study found that pregnancy-related deaths in the United States increased 33 percent in 2020.

City Hall, NY – Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Immigration Committee Chair Shahana Hanif released the following statement after a Richmond County judge ruled against the city’s recently passed municipal voting law. In December 2021, the Council passed legislation to give non-United States citizens living in New York City the right to vote in local elections.

“Authorizing significant rent increases for over one million rent-stabilized tenants in a vacuum only adds to the pressures that New Yorkers face at a time when our city’s housing supply is limited. The City must ensure that renters are protected and have the security they need to live safely in their homes, and our housing supply remains healthy. City Hall, NY – Speaker Adrienne Adams submitted testimony to the Rent Guidelines Board on its proposed range of rent increases for rent stabilized apartments ahead of its final vote on June 21, 2022. In her testimony, Speaker Adams urged the Board to adopt increases at the lowest end of its proposed range.

The Speaker’s testimony states:

“Allowing substantial increases in rent at this time would endanger far too many New Yorkers who are unable to pay these proposed rent increases.
