Reverend Al Sharpton, John Jay President Jeremy Travis to Participate in Community Forum

City Hall – Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Council Member Inez Dickens announced today that they will convene a summit in Harlem to combat gun violence in the community. The summit will take place in the auditorium at Harlem Hospital on June 3rd from 4 to 7 p.m.,

Reverend Al Sharpton will join Council Members Robert Jackson and Melissa Mark-Viverito, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, John Jay College of Criminal Justice President Jeremy Travis, members of the clergy and anti-gun violence activists in an effort to find ways to fight and prevent gang and gun violence.

I want to thank Mayor Bloomberg for his presentation this afternoon of the fiscal year (FY) 2010 budget.

The City is facing the worst financial outlook since the 1970s, but thanks to the surpluses we have accumulated over the last several years, the outlook for this year is not as bad as it could have been. However, the projection for FY11 and FY12 continue to raise serious concerns, with projected gaps of $4.6 billion and $5.2 billion respectively.

It sends a message that our nation will not tolerate those who would commit an act of violence against anyone based on who that person is, or they are perceived to be. And it finally broadens the federal definition of a hate crime to recognize such violence regardless of when or where it is carried out.

Council’s revenue projections fall below Office of Management and Budget estimates for the first time since 2003

City Hall – Speaker Christine C. Quinn, together with Finance Committee Chair David Weprin, today presented the City Council’s response to Mayor Bloomberg’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 preliminary budget. According to the Council’s projections, City tax revenues have fallen an additional $295 million since the Mayor released the FY10 preliminary budget.
