Governor Paterson and Attorney General Cuomo are absolutely correct in pointing out the lack of diversity among the candidates recommended to succeed Chief Judge Judith Kaye, who after 25 years of public service is retiring from our State’s highest court.

As an elected official serving one of the most diverse states in our country, I find it extremely disconcerting that the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination was unable to recommend at least one qualified woman or Hispanic candidate to lead New York’s Court of Appeals.

BROOKLYN – Speaker Christine C. Council Funding of EBT Machines shows huge gains at the City’s Greenmarkets

City Hall – Council Member Michael C. Nelson today called on Governor Paterson and the State Legislature to reinstate the “Commuter Tax”, a modest charge on non-residents who work in New York City and benefit from city services. If the tax was reinstated, it would generate approximately $500 million in revenue for the City. Such a funding stream would be critical in light of the City’s current financial situation, which threatens core services such as police and fire protection, education, and senior centers.

Quinn and Women’s Issues Committee Chair Helen Sears held a hearing on legislation to protect women’s access to reproductive health care facilities. The Clinic Access Bill strengthens safeguards for women who are faced with harassment and other hostile acts as they enter and exit local reproductive health care clinics.
