(City Hall) – Council Member Michael C. Nelson praised the city’s new plan to significantly reduce costs while at the same time generate much needed revenue yet believes more can be done to ensure the city reaches it goal.

That goal, saving an estimated $500 million, also includes a plan to collect over $100 million in debt and a considerable portion of that amount comes from unpaid parking tickets.

I am heartened that United States District Court in Boston has recognized that the Defense of Marriage Act as an unconstitutional law. A nation founded on principles of liberty and equality should never adopt a law whose sole intention is to deny rights to millions of its citizens. The federal government, like all states, should recognize same-sex marriages and afford same sex couples all of the rights and responsibilities connected to marriage.

Today Councilmember Helen Diane Foster announced that she has introduced Intro 283 before the City Council to help eliminate and prevent discrimination in City government and City agencies.

The purpose of Intro 283 is “to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to identifying, eliminating and preventing discrimination, and promoting human rights in governmental operations.”

Intro 283 is called the Human Rights Government in Operations Audit Law or the Human Rights GOAL Law.

Council to restore critical services for most in-need New Yorkers; Budget is on-time and fiscally responsible

City Hall – After last week’s budget agreement between the City Council and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the Council will vote on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 budget. Despite limited resources from the State, and a lack of declining stimulus dollars, the Council will adopt a fiscally-responsible, timely budget that will not raise City taxes.
