When plans for the 126th Street bus depot threatened to disturb a colonial era African American burial ground, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito urgently acted to safeguard this ancestral space.

Together, Dr. Patricia Singletary, the pastor of the Elmendorf Reform Church who brought this issue to light, and Melissa created the Harlem African Burial Ground Task Force in 2009.

Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Council Member Julissa Ferreras-Copeland and Council Member Elizabeth Crowley stopped by The Greater Ridgewood Youth Council to visit with students enjoying their summer programming and jobs!
This year, the Council gave a record $125 million in funding for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). SYEP provides thousands of local young people with paid summer job opportunities for up to six weeks in July and August.

As part of the Speaker’s commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion and equity in tech workforce development, the Council is funding a pilot program geared toward NYCHA residents. Through this funding, Coalition 4 Queens and Per Scholas will provide training in IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and software development. This training will then be considered as qualifications for hiring in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree by 11 companies who have signed onto the initiative’s pledge.
