Legislation tackles shelter overcrowding and removes unnecessary barriers in New York City’s already challenging rental market

New York – Today at the New York City Council’s Stated Meeting, Council Members Christopher Marte and Lynn Schulman introduced the “Just Paws Eviction” legislative package, a two-bill effort to eliminate blanket no-pet clauses in both subsidized and unsubsidized rental housing across New York City.

Queens Public Library hosted a kickoff for a $39 million project to replace the Rego Park library branch with a groundbreaking ceremony on Dec. 9 that was more than 30 years in the making.

Council Member Lynn Schulman teamed up with the Met Council on Jewish Poverty to provide over 250 turkeys to healthcare workers at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center last week.

Schulman and the Met Council provided more than 250 turkeys and all the Thanksgiving fixings to Jamaica Hospital staff on Friday, Nov. 21, including nurses and first responders such as EMTs and paramedics.

Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital partnered with the River Fund to distribute more than 14,000 feminine hygiene products for women in the southeast Queens community earlier this month.

One in five women suffers from period poverty, where they simply cannot afford to buy feminine hygiene products, according to the hospital.

“Our team at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills is deeply connected to the Queens community, and we believe in showing up for one another in meaningful ways,” said Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital President Lorraine Chambers Lewis.

Expectant mothers struggling with housing gifted the essentials at event

A dozen pregnant women experiencing housing insecurity were treated to a heartwarming community baby shower on May 29 at the Volume Seventeen Event Venue in Richmond Hill.

The event, organized by the nonprofit Nyasha’s Promise, was co-sponsored by Councilmember Lynn Schulman (D-Forest Hills), Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (D-Jamaica), Amazon and Planned Parenthood, and provided essential baby supplies helping expectant mothers prepare for their new arrivals.

Forest Hills residents can once again participate in sustainable waste management in their own neighborhood.

Following a pause due to budget constraints, the Big Reuse Community Composting Program in MacDonald Park officially launched to the public on Sunday, after Councilmember Lynn Schulman (D-Forest Hills) restored its funding.

Community members may bring food scraps, such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and eggshells, to the Forest Hills Greenmarket every Sunday from 8 a.m.
