The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the “in house” law office for the City Council and provides legal services to the City Council. OGC advises and provides guidance to Council Members and employees on legal matters including but not limited to those related to conflicts of interest, litigation, employment, parliamentary procedures, Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests, appointments, document retention, legislation, compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, and policies affecting the City Council and the City.

OGC is seeking to fill a Senior Paralegal position to provide support to senior OGC attorneys in relation to legal issues including but not limited to: litigation; ethics; employment; contracts; and legislative procedures.

SALARY RANGE:

$72,000 to $82,000

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Closely review and track litigation-related deadlines and provide regular updates to OGC attorneys.
  • Assist in preparing court filings and trainings.
  • Proofread a wide array of documents and communications, including those pertaining to litigation, internal policies and training, and Council-wide OGC guidance on various legal issues.
  • Engage with Council Members and their staff regarding Chapter 68-related disclosure requirements.
  • Assist OGC attorneys with reviewing, preparing, and editing PowerPoint presentations and training-related documents.
  • Handle other matters in OGC as may be assigned, including administrative tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 2 years of prior experience in providing support to attorneys.
  • Bachelor’s degree or associate degree from an accredited college. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Has the judgment necessary to handle confidential matters.
  • Strong organizational skills and established capacity to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects.  
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues of all levels of seniority.
  • Strong interest in New York City government and general knowledge of local legislative body processes is preferred. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
