STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER FARAH N. LOUIS

CITY HALL, NY — In a unanimous vote, New York City Council Members Farah N. Louis and Vanessa L. Gibson were elected as co-chairs of the Women’s Caucus on the cusp of Women’s HERstory Month. The Brooklyn and Bronx representatives will lead the twelve-member Caucus for a two-year term, a period during which they will champion gender equity and inclusion while building on the extraordinary legacy of previous women trailblazers. Through sound policy and budgetary priorities, the Caucus remain committed to amplifying the voices of women, girls, and gender minorities – regardless of age, race, or sexual orientation.

“I am honored to have received the nomination to join my colleague, Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson as co-chairs of the City Council Women’s Caucus. We are a group of dynamic women and compassionate advocates that have produced some of the city’s most effective legislation on women’s and gender equity issues. It has been rewarding, productive, and empowering to learn and legislate alongside my sisters in the City Council. I look forward to working with this prolific caucus to make New York City a true champion of the rights of women and gender minorities!” said Council Member Farah N. Louis.

“When I am in my district or at City Hall, I am reminded of the incredible women trailblazers that paved the way for me to be in elected office. As we celebrate Women`s HERstory Month and one hundred years since the passage of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote, it is a reminder that there is still more work to be done. I am honored for the opportunity to work with my colleague, Council Member Louis to continue to advance legislation and policies to promote gender equity, and I want to thank the dynamic women of the caucus for their support,” said Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson.

New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis represents the 45th Council District, which is comprised of Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands, & Kensington in Brooklyn, NY. She is a member of the committees on Civil Service and Labor; Economic Development; Education; Finance; Housing and Buildings; Youth Services; and Justice System. Council Member Louis is the Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus and Vice Co-Chair of the Black, Latino/a, and Asian Caucus.
