NEW YORK — Council Member Farah Louis (D-Brooklyn), a member of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, issued the following statement after a federal jury found three police officers guilty of violating George Floyd’s civil rights. Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao were at the scene when George Floyd was murdered by former police officer, Derek Chauvin, while in their custody.

STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER LOUIS

“On Thursday, a Minnesota federal jury convicted Police Officers Tou Thau, Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane of violating George Floyd’s constitutional rights. The senseless death of yet another Black American should not be a precursor for accountability and reforms in community policing. Our nation’s justice system must become truly equitable for all Americans, regardless of race or national origin.”
