“Today is a momentous occasion for the residents of Flatbush and East Flatbush as we celebrate the reopening of the Clarendon Library—a cherished institution that has stood as a pillar of our community for over 100 years. After months of tireless advocacy and collaboration, we are thrilled to see this vital resource back in service months ahead of schedule.
The journey to this day has not been easy. For far too long, families in our district were without access to this library—a lifeline for literacy programs, educational workshops, and a safe space for growth. As the only library within walking distance for many in my district, the closure of the Clarendon Library was a loss of opportunity for learning, connection, and empowerment. It left our children, our families, and our future with fewer resources to thrive.
But today, we turn the page. The Clarendon Library is back, stronger and better than ever, ready to serve as the heart of our community once again. With modernized facilities and enhanced resources, it will continue to inspire creativity, learning, and growth for generations to come.
This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible leadership of Linda Johnson, President of the Brooklyn Public Library, whose advocacy for these institutions has been unwavering. I also extend my deepest gratitude to the NYC Department of Design and Construction for their partnership in addressing challenges and ensuring that the reopening was expedited.
Finally, I want to thank the residents of our community for your patience, your advocacy, and your unwavering commitment. Your voices were heard, and together, we have shown the power of unity and determination.
Welcome back to the Clarendon Library, and thank you for joining us in celebrating this new chapter for our district.”
