NEW YORK—Council Member Farah Louis (D-Brooklyn), Vice Co-Chair of the Black Latino and Asian Caucus (BLAC), released the following statement after Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department in Minnesota was charged with second-degree manslaughter after the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright.
STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER LOUIS
“Wearing a badge should not guarantee impunity for police officers whose excessive use of force result in the death of a civilian. Despite video evidence, we have seen justice denied in too many cases involving police brutality, misconduct, and shootings. The indictment of 26-year police veteran Kim Potter is a step forward but does little to reassure us that history will not repeat itself.”
New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis represents the 45th Council District, which comprises Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands, & Kensington in Brooklyn, NY. She is a member of the committees on Civil Service and Labor; Economic Development; Education; Finance; Housing and Buildings; Youth Services; and Justice System. Council Member Louis is the Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus and Vice Co-Chair of the Black, Latino/a, and Asian Caucus.
