BRONX, NY – On June 22, 2023 the New York City Council approved the co-naming of the crosswalk located at 6115 Broadway between West 251st Street and Manhattan College Parkway to Betty and Lloyd Adams Way. 

The proposal was first put forward by Council Member Eric Dinowitz in 2021 with the support of Lloyd and Betty’s children, Lilka and Brandon Lloyd Adams, but due to bureaucratic hurdles was not able to be passed until June, 2023. The co-naming proposal brought overwhelming support from local community and civic organizations. The resolution was passed by Bronx Community Board 8’s Full Board on March 14, 2023 and April 18, 2023, passing both times unanimously. 

The honor is a testament to the significant contributions made by Betty and Lloyd Adams to the community, and serves as a recognition of their legacy. Betty Campbell-Adams (May 17, 1955 – December 11, 2020) and Lloyd Adams (January 26, 1949 – February 1, 2007) opened Lloyd’s Carrot Cake across the street from Van Cortlandt Park in 1986 and it quickly became a staple in the community, and a destination for tourists from across the country.

For over 30 years, the quaint but very well-known bakery has supplied the baked goods made from scratch, to numerous patrons and businesses in the tri-state area and beyond.

“Betty and Lloyd are local legends and were true community servants,” Council Member Eric Dinowitz said. “They gave us so much more than the best carrot cake in the country. Betty and Lloyd were deeply committed to improving the community they served, and their presence was felt far beyond the confines of their store. I’m proud that we are able to recognize their contributions through this co-naming, and thrilled to see Brandon and Lilka carry on their legacy.”

“The approval of the street co-naming is a direct product of the support from the Lloyd’s Carrot Cake community, and we are absolutely thrilled that the hard work and contributions from our parents will forever be cemented in New York City history,” said Brandon Lloyd Adams. “We look forward to the day of the unveiling to celebrate with all of our friends and family.”
