District 7 Council member Shaun Abreu, CC ’14, introduced a City Council resolution Thursday afternoon calling on the New York City Department of Education to establish a curriculum on machine learning and the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence for public school students.
Abreu’s bill cites the widespread use of AI as necessitating new guidance within the city’s public schools. According to the bill, 47 percent of students between the ages of 12 and 14 have reported using ChatGPT for their school work, and 40 percent of teachers use it on a weekly basis.
The City Council will now assign the bill to the appropriate committee to hold a public hearing. The committee will gather feedback from the public and other government agencies before proceeding with the committee vote and mayoral decision.
