City Limits – City Council Immigration Committee Chair Shahana Hanif called conditions at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal a “failure to meet the basic standards required by the City’s Right to Shelter law,” echoing concerns she and others expressed at a Council oversight hearing on HERRCs in December.

“This administration has created a system of HERRCs which are currently operating as a pseudo shelter system with none of the minimum standards or legal protections in place for shelters,” Hanif said at the time.

Brooklyn Paper – “When we learned there were two emergency shelters opening in our district, our office immediately sprung into action,” said Council Member Shahana Hanif, who represents Park Slope and the surrounding areas. “We are engaged with government partners in [the Department of Homeless Services] and [Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs] to get an accurate headcount and understanding of the facilities and services.”

The local pol began seeking out ways to aid organizations in their efforts to help support the newly arrived immigrants.

Hell Gate – “We want brick-and-mortar facilities, not outdoor facilities,” said Brooklyn City Councilmember Shahana Hanif, who came to meet with migrants at the Watson Hotel on Tuesday. “I’m particularly frustrated and angry that no information was communicated to them. There were some real fears that people had about getting detained and possible deportation, that was because of this lack of information.”

“These are people, not pawns, and I condemn the administration’s actions,” she wrote in a statement. “We know that the needs of asylum seekers cannot be met in this setting.

New York Times – In a statement on Monday, Shahana Hanif, chair of the City Council immigration committee, said that the Red Hook facility failed to meet standards required by the city’s right-to-shelter laws. A video posted on Sunday showed that cots in the facility were placed head-to-toe in adjoining rows; in regular city shelters, more space is required between beds.

City + State – At Tuesday’s hearing, Council Member Shahana Hanif, who sponsors a resolution calling on the state to pass legislation creating a pathway for legalizing basement apartments, called for new and expanded funding for the pilot program.“With the skyrocketing price of housing in our city we know that basement apartments are not going to disappear,” Hanif said.
