City Hall – New York City Council Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Shahana Hanif and Sandy Nurse and Vice Co-Chairs Carmen De La Rosa and Jen Gutiérrez issued the following statement in reaction to Mayor Eric Adams naming Randy Mastro our city’s First Deputy Mayor.
“Last fall, Randy Mastro tried – and failed – to explain away his checkered record. Now, Mayor Adams, whose tenure has been defined by self-serving and questionable decisions, has chosen Mastro as his First Deputy Mayor.
It’s widely acknowledged that the sitting Mayor is beholden to Donald Trump who actively undermines the interests of New Yorkers on a daily basis. So it’s only fitting that he would select a right-hand man who’s spent his career suing our city and serving Republican and special interest employers.
Last year, the Progressive Caucus played a key role in getting Mastro’s nomination for Corporation Counsel withdrawn. In his unsuccessful confirmation hearing, it was clear that Mastro was unfit to represent this city – and that remains true today.”
