Council Member Shahana Hanif released the following statement on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, on interruptions to Trans Healthcare:

“Shame on NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, and any other medical providers who are denying care to trans patients. I am furious that hospitals are acquiescing to President Trump’s bigoted agenda of trans erasure. 

I am aware of at least one young constituent whose pre-scheduled appointments for gender-affirming care have been canceled in recent days. My Office is in contact with their family and is eager to support however possible. No New Yorker should have their access to healthcare undermined by fear-mongering from the White House and cowardice from providers.

I am grateful that New York State Attorney General James has made it clear that any healthcare facilities that engage in medical discrimination are in violation of New York State Law. Care should continue uninterrupted.

District 39 is home to Brooklyn Pride, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, and a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. We will always have the backs of our trans siblings.”
