COBBLE HILL — It was a bittersweet celebration on Thursday at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Clinton Street.
Elected officials, community groups, businesses and residents gathered at the corner where Katherine Harris, 31, was mowed down and killed by a drunken driver in April 2023. Brooklyn Heights resident Martha Atwater was struck and killed at the same intersection in 2013, and Atlantic Avenue store owner
Muyassar Moustapha was run down there in 2015. A block away, at Atlantic Avenue and Court Street, Shanti Joyner, 18, was killed in a fiery crash last August.
On Tuesday, the New York City Department of Transportation announced that after decades of community advocacy, DOT would finally be making the safety improvements to the western section of Atlantic Avenue that the community has been pleading for.
Updates will include signal changes, pedestrian islands, expanded mid-block crossings, curb enhancements, and the deployment of two full time traffic enforcement agents.
